Deaf Mentor Camper- ASL Weekend

Hello everyone,

Now, the time is getting near for the ASL Weekend on May 20-21 2011, I know many of you have been involved working as a deaf mentor at the ASL weekend.  This year, we are making a small change for all the deaf people who want to be involved with this kind of job: be a deaf camp counselor.  Here are the guidelines what you will be doing:

 As a Deaf Camp Counselor – your job duties will include:

  • Being head of the table – sit at the end of the table for each meal; breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday.
  • Interact with the hearing students during the workshops and after workshops
  • Interact with students after the entertainments on Friday and Saturday nights

   You will be paid during that weekend plus free room and board.  ONLY 20 people will be hired so please sign up as fast as you can.  Deadline is on April 31st or first come, first serve !

Access to Independence Job posting

Access to Independence is seeking a Veteran’s Outreach worker. This limited-term, half time position will provide outreach, independent living services, and assistive technology and home accessibility assessments for veterans in a four county area. Qualified Applicants should: Be a veteran, have a degree, have experience with disability issues, or a combination of education and experience. Applicants should have a commitment to the IL philosophy, and strong communication, problem solving, and time management skills. Knowledge of veteran and community resources, assistive technology and home accessibility is required. Applicants must have access to transportation for meetings throughout the 4-county region.

**Deaf Benefits Specialist: This is a full-time position based in Waukesha, WI. Candidate must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and have excellent English written and expressive communication skills. Must have basic computer skills and be a self-starter who can work independently. Limited statewide and regional travel required. Successful candidate will have knowledge of services and resources available for persons with disabilities, a thorough knowledge of Deaf Culture, and awareness of the social, cultural, and economic needs of deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing persons who use ASL as their primary communication. Knowledge of and experience working with various service providers including public benefits, insurance and/or the legal system desired. Must be able to research and investigate problems, interpret and apply regulations governing eligibility for benefits and maintain accurate and confidential records. Selected candidate will be employed by the Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing under the supervision of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
