Hello! I’m Jenny, vice president of WAD. I’d like to share an update on the Senate Committee on Government Operations, Labor, and Economic Development. The committee of 5 Senators had a meeting to vote on various bills, including AB 377, all of which had a Public Hearing last week on March 3rd. The results of the vote shows that three voted in favor and two against the bill. This means that the bill has passed out of the committee and will advance to the full Senate for consideration and vote. We don’t know when the Senate will read and vote on AB 377 yet. We will let you know as soon as we know.

The most important thing we need you to do is to send a letter to your Senator TODAY! If you’re not sure how to send a letter to your Senator, you can go to legis.wisconsin.gov first to search for your Legislators. Look for “Who are my Legislators” and enter your home address including the building number and street name. You will then see your Assembly Representative, and Senator for Wisconsin. Select the Senator, and you will see their information and their staff as well. You will find the Senator’s email address and select one, two, or all of their staff email addresses to include in the email you will send.

We have two template letters you can choose from. Pick the one you feel fits you best. Or you can write your own letter explaining why you oppose AB377, or modify one of the two templates. Our legislators like to see personalized letters, not form letters that everyone uses. You can still use the template if that’s easiest, modifying it even just a little bit is better.

Send your letter right away!

While you’re writing a letter to your Senator, you should also send a letter to Governor Tony Evers. The Governor will have the opportunity to sign the bill into law, or veto it, after the Senate votes and passes the bill. If the Governor vetoes the bill, it would be sent back to both the Assembly and Senate, and require not a simple majority (51%) vote, but a supermajority vote (two-thirds or 66.67%). Will they have enough votes for a supermajority?

We will have to see.

We will keep a close eye on this bill as it progresses. Send your letter to your Senator and Governor Tony Evers now!

Thank you!
